Mikel Arteta, Steven Gerrard, and Patrick Vieira have all had positive Covid-19 tests within the last seven days in the Premier League

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is the latest English top-flight manager to return a positive Covid-19 test and thus be sidelined for his club. This comes as a huge blow to the Gunners who host Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Saturday January 1, 2022

Arteta to miss Guardiola reunion

Arsenal confirmed their manager’s status through an official press statement on Wednesday, saying: “Mikel Arteta will miss our match against Manchester City on New Year’s Day after testing positive for COVID-19. Mikel is isolating in line with Government guidelines and we wish him well.”

Coaching assistants Steve Round and Albert Stuivenberg are expected to step in for the Spanish manager ahead of their clash against Manchester City. This is the second time Arteta would return a positive Covid-19 test after being the first person to test positive for the virus in the Premier League in March 2020.

Arteta joins Gerrard, Vieira with positive Covid-19 test

Arteta joins Aston Villa’s Steven Gerrard and Crystal Palace’s Patrick Vieira on a list of Premier League managers to have contacted Covid-19 within the past week. The Arsenal manager is now expected to be in isolation for at least one week in line with public health guidelines.

A record 103 positive Covid-19 results were discovered between December 20 and December 26 in the English Premier League, leading to the postponement of 16 top-flight matches to date
