9th National Assembly Inauguration Kicks-Off | APC, PDP Senators-elect Clash Over Voting Pattern

The inauguration of the ninth National Assembly has just kicked-off at 10 am by the clerk of the assembly Mohammed Sani-Omolori.

Prior to the commencement of the inauguration, some governors of the All Progressives Congress led by the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, stormed the NASS complex to witness the ceremony and the election that will follow.

Others who are in the National Assembly includes the governors of Kwara, Plateau, Kebbi Osun, Kano, Katsina and Nasarawa states.

The voting pattern to be used for electing leaders of the 9the Senate has caused an uproar at the upper legislative chamber.

While senators-elect belonging to the All Progressive Congress (APC) are clamouring for the adoption of open ballot system, their colleagues from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) want the secret ballot system.

The secret ballot system was used in 2015 to elect the immediate past leaders of the 8th National Assembly, the system is said to be used in today’s election.

But a Federal High Court on Monday ordered for the set aside of the secret ballot system adopted in 2015. The court ordered a return to the 2011 open ballot system.

When the court order was brought to the notice of Mohammed Sani, the Clark of the red chamber, the presiding officer said he is unaware of such order mandating him to use the open ballot system for the election expected to begin by 10am.
