A look at Super Eagles players primed for moves away from their clubs this January

The 2022 winter transfer window opened on January 1 with clubs and players across Europe presented with the opportunity to make moves ahead of the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Following mixed fortunes for Nigerian players across Europe in the first half of the season, some of the Super Eagles favourites are also in the mix for potential moves this January.

Here are the three Nigerian players who are most likely to join new clubs during the January transfer window.

Joe Aribo – Glasgow Rangers

The 25-year-old midfielder has been in imperious form for the Gers recently, arguably their best player so far in the 2021/22 season. Aribo has racked up over 100 league appearances since he joined Rangers in 2019 and he is up to six goals and five assists in all competitions this season.

Aribo’s contract runs out in May 2023 with no concrete talks of a renewal yet. His impressive performances have alerted the likes of Brentford, Crystal Palace and Watford and the Scottish champions might be willing to cash in on the Nigerian while his stock is high.

Paul Onuachu – KRC Genk

Belgium-based striker Paul Onuachu will be hoping that things happen for him in 2022. The Super Eagles striker was expected to leave the Jupiler Pro League last summer but a move never materialised.

Onuachu hasiued from whence he stopped last season with 12 goals notched in 18 league appearances so far. The 27-year-old centre forward has been linked with a sensational move to Spanish champions Atletico Madrid

Samuel Kalu – Bordeaux

One Super Eagle who would be looking to revive his career through a change of scenery this month is Bordeaux’s Samuel Kalu. Since falling out with former manager Paulo Sousa, the 24-year-old has been unable to string up a decent run for the Ligue 1 side.

Injuries and poor form have limited the winger to just 11 Ligue 1 appearances this season with one goal and an assist his only goal contributions.

Being left out of the Super Eagles squad to the 2021 African Cup of Nations shows that Kalu cannot afford to stay at the Ligue 1 club till his contract expires in 18 months
