Rihanna mourns cousin who died after being shot in Barbados


 

Rihanna is mourning the death of her cousin.

The 29-year-old singer took to Instagram on Tuesday to pay tribute to Tavon Kaiseen Alleyne, who was shot and killed in Barbados, just one day after Christmas.

RIP cousin… can’t believe it was just last night that I held you in my arms! never thought that would be the last time I felt the warmth in your body!!!” Rihanna captioned a slideshow of pics of the two together. “Love you always man!

According to Nation News, 21-year-old Alleyne was shot by an unidentified man several times on Tuesday around 7 p.m., while he was walking near his home in Barbados. Sky News reports that the shooter fled the scene, while Alleyne later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Rihanna has visited Barbados several times this year, with her cousin posting a sweet shot of the pair’s reunion in honor of her birthday in February. “Every day we are happy to have you in our lives.” he wrote. “Happy Birthday cousin, we really love you. Your presence in my life is a source of joy and happiness. To my favorite cousin, may all your dreams and wishes come true.

Rihanna isn’t the only star to speak out about gun violence.

Earlier, he 29-year-old singer was honored in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Thursday, as the street she grew up on as a child was renamed after her.

RiRi couldn’t have looked more stunning — or proud — in an off-the-shoulder yellow Hellessy shirt dress at the ceremony. Officials announced last month that they were changing the name of Westbury New Road in Barbados’ capital as a tribute to the GRAMMY winner.

Rihanna took to Instagram to celebrate the occasion, sharing a pic of her new street sign.

“On any block,” she captioned the pic, before reflecting on her childhood in Barbados.

“A day my people and I will never forget!” she began a touching essay about the memories she shared with her neighbors and family on the street. “WESTBURY is more than a community, we’re family!!! Thank you for all that you’ve poured into my life and the woman I am! It takes a village, and I’m glad my village was you!!!! To God be the Glory!!!! #RiRiDrive.”

From her hit songs, to her fashion and beauty lines, to her acting roles, Rihanna has given Barbados a lot to be proud of.
