CHAN Eagles top striker Anthony Okpotu has said his goal against Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday has come as a great relief to him.
After firing blank in his first two matches, the reigning highest goal scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League scored a spectacular opener for Nigeria in the 3-1 defeat of Equatorial Guinea.
In a telephone chat with Daily Trust, the Lobi Stars striker said although he suffered goal drought, he never doubted his ability to score in the ongoing Africa Nations Championship in Morocco.
He said as a striker and the highest goal scorer in the NPFL, a lot is expected from him by the fans but he did not allow that to weigh him down.
According to him, even as he was not scoring, he was not playing badly so he knew the goals will eventually come.
“I can now heave a sigh of relief because it was taking too long. As one of the most experienced players in the squad and the highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league, Nigerians wanted to see goals from me. It took a while but it has come.
“I hope to build on the goal against Equatorial Guinea to score more goals for the team.
“With the convincing win, confidence is high and we shall approach our next game with the right spirit,” he said.
